Several cups of green tea everyday may actually help with depression as some of men and women in Japan have shown. This was the recent finding of the study of a university in Sendai.

Men and women who were at least 70 years old that drink at least four cups of green tea everyday are around 44% less prone to encounter depression.

Previous studies can be used as a good reference that green tea is good for our health. Mental and physical. These studies have established that people who drink green tea are has lower levels of distress. These studies inspired the proponents of the recent research to look into connections between green tea intake and occurrence of depression in 1,058 elderly individuals classified as healthy.

The 39% of the female subjects and about 34% of the male subjects showed symptoms of depression. Severe depression was determined in 24% of the women and 20% of the men according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Looking at the survey, 488 of the subjects downed at least 4 cups of tea a day, 284 told the proponents that they drank 2 to 3 cups, while 286 had one or less cup of green tea a day.

It is believed that the component theanine, an amino acid found in green tea is responsible for the beneficial effect shown in the study. Theanine has some tranquilizing aftereffects to the human brain.

Studies have also shown that drinking coffee, oolong or black tea has no contributory factor in lowering depression symptoms, amongst many other anti-depressant herbs.

The proponents recommend more research to establish that more green tea will also mean less occurrence of depression among elderly people.
